COUNT ON US
When you call 911 with a medical emergency, you are counting on a rapid response. How have we delivered that prompt, professional response without fail? Port Chester-Rye-Rye Brook EMS receives income from billing a patient’s insurance company. We receive funds from the municipalities we serve to help defray the cost of delivering our service. But we depend on private contributions to help run our service as well.
Revenue from insurance companies is all too often difficult to collect for services rendered. It is always discounted by the insurance company and never equals the cost of delivering the service. Many of our patients don’t have insurance. About 25% of our calls do not require transportation to the hospital. We receive no reimbursement for calls when we do not transport the patient to the hospital.
While we are quite diligent to assure that we spend every penny wisely, our budget is always austere. It may surprise you to learn that New York State law does not consider EMS to be an essential service like police and fire protection. We, on the other hand, know all too well that when they need us, the public believes we are the MOST essential service!
